Germination on cereals and peas have been affected by pre-harvest dessicants applied this fall. Chemical injury on the seedlings has been observed more frequently this season compared to past crop years. The dessicant is absorbed into the embryo and it affects the radicle and primary roots. The primary root develops abnormally, is brittle and often lacks secondary roots and root hairs. These symptoms may be difficult to observe in some cases however if these seeds are planted they will not develop into healthy plants. Ensure that you test the seed early. If there is any sign of chemical damage the seed should be tested again in February if you are considering using this seed. It is highly recommended that chemical damaged seed is not used.
